About Me

I am a member of the Samba team, and the maintainer of the Linux CIFS/SMB2/SMB3 client and related components. I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from Rice University. My particular research interests are network interoperability, file systems and especially modern high performance network file systems. I was a coauthor of the SNIA CIFS Specification (and chair of the workiing group), and have been involved in Networking and File System development and design since 1989. I was the Architect for File Systems and Network File Systems within IBM's Linux Technology Center. I now work as a Principal Software Engineer for Microsoft on their Azure Storage team, and have really enjoyed improving Linux access to SMB3 servers, especially the fun challenges in optimizing access to the cloud over SMB3. I am based in Austin.

Other Interests

During my High School days (Archmere Academy), I played on the school soccer and tennis teams, and still enjoy these (I also enjoyed coaching youth soccer, including helping coach the middle school teams). I was the State Junior Chess Champion, and one of the top 50 under 16 in the country. I also enjoyed and did well in math competitions. As my children grow and learn, I enjoy rediscovering the joy of Science and Literature with them (especially 19th century British literature). The Samba team is composed of many brilliant people from all over the world, and it is a joy learning about other cultures and exchanging ideas with them on a wide variety of topics.
